One of the neat features of the Tomy Train series was the articulated figures that could set in trains, trucks, and carriages as well as interact with several accessories. They key into the studded building system and many figures have magnets embedded in the feet to stick to magnetic bases and activate some features.
The table below shows most of the figures in the range and what sets they were included in. Figures that appeared in multiple products are shown individually while figures that only appeared together in one release are catalogues together. Below that is a closer look at the figures and some of the accessories they were sold with and how they interacted.

Tomy Train figures are very nicely articulated, with individually moving arms and legs and swiveling heads. The original design of feet had a long oval cutout with a round protrusion in the middle to let them engage with the studded accessories, but around 1990 the feet were modified with slots to hold magnets, with most new early 1990s sets coming with magnetic figures until the mid 1990s when they disappeared from new sets.
The original four figures from 1988 are the blue driver figure, TOMY-hatted worker figure, and two passenger figures.
In 1990 two more passengers, variations on the original types, were released. Later on, other figures were developed for the Thomas range as well as specific sets and the later Tomy Trains sets.
When the European range was updated to use the curvy TOMY logo with the stencil-style TRAIN branding the blue driver figure was given the name Tim the Train Driver. He appeared in multiple U.K. "Trainspotters Handbook" catalogues and on the rear of boxes, with many portions of text written from his perspective.
The Plarail Doll Play series that started in 1993 used similar "Doll Play Doll" figures with magnetic feet and articulated limbs that were based on the Tomy Train figures. The driver and male passenger resemble the Tomy Train equivalents fairly directly, and the female passenger has the pink legs of the newer Tomy Train figure but the dotted top of the older one.
Figures can stand or sit on many of the studded portions present on most accessories. A row of chairs that looks very similar to three of the classic LEGO chairs was released that figures can sit on.
All of the trains in the series include cabs with seats where figures can sit. When the figures are fully-seated, two indentations in their bottoms let the sit on studs, and the earlier studded type of locomotives have studs inside the cab to attach them more securely.
Figures can also be sat inside the open passenger carriage as well as some of the other standard train cars.
The early rolling gantry crane has a seat for a figure to sit in, as does the forklift and other vehicles.
In fact, the very neat bus released in 1990 has a push-down spring-loaded motor and it can seat two figures in the passenger compartment. A very neat accessory.
The log tipper truck released in 1991 uses the same push-and-go chassis.
The large bases used for the Inter-city Station and Freight Station have two moving magnetic pathways marked with stickers on the base which figures can be moved between using the red levers near the road side of the base. Each of the accessories also have additional magnetic features.
The Inter-City Station has a wind-up escalator feature that can be pushed downwards and released back up when a magnetic figure is placed on it.
The Freight Station's log chute has an ON/OFF control with an additional magnetic feature with the nearby operator console. If the chute is set to on, it will dispense a log when the train passes, but if it is set to off it will not drop a log unless a figure (with magnets in its feet) is standing at the operator's console which overrides the mechanism to allow a log to drop.
The yellow Tomy Trains shed has an orange workman figure that pops down when pressing one of the buttons.
The Sound Play Station includes illustrations of the Tomy Train figures in the style seen in some catalogues and boxes.
This ticket-taking booth included as part of the 1339 Signal Station has a magnet in the opening door so that a figure can "walk" in and out when it is opened.
In 1988 a pack of two Tomy Train figures, the blue driver figure and the passenger in the "53" shirt, was released.
