Mountain Railroad Chip and Dale Acorn Rolling Set

Originally written November 1, 2024

In 1996 as part of the Disney-licensed series of Mountain Railway toys a version of the old 1979 Acorn Rolling Set was released featuring Chip and Dale. The set includes a medium figure-eight layout with mountain and automatic cycling of the acorns around the track and down a chute section to be picked up again.

Mickey sits (emerges?) from the cab of the red steam locomotive in this set. The green funnel bobs up and down as the train runs. The train in this set has an off-the-shelf power switch on the cab roof. Like older trains, the battery is inserted up from the bottom. You can see where the motor is sitting inside the tooling in the front of the locomotive...

The carriage in this set is a tipping wagon that is tipped by the sign holder at the top of the mountain. Although this set seems mostly unused, it was missing the coupling bar that links the truck to the locomotive, so I had to borrow one from an older Toy Town set.

The track in this set is the usual colorful variety, with a few special orange pieces that connect to the loading bay. The fence piece fits into one of them and the other has a rotating clip that holds the tipping loading platform in place.

The mountain is made up of two halves that form a tunnel underneath. A plastic holder at the top both tips the wagon and holds the larger cardboard sign.

The acorn trough is made up of two sections. Two of the flat-type trees Tomy has used since the 1970s slot into the track.

The main gimmick of the set centers around the tipper wagon tipping its acorn down a spiraling trough to a loading station where it can be picked back up and taken around again. The acorn has a weight that can slide back and forth inside so it flips over itself as it rolls.
