Payva Tren Verbena (late 1960s/early 1970s)

First written June 28, 2024

Spanish toy company Payva produced in Spain a few train sets based on the Plarail Yuuenchi or Amusement Park line of Plarail from the late 1960s. The trains and track, based on the Japanese Tomy Plarail system, were seemingly produced by Payva in Spain.

Payva Trenet

Payva released their version of the Plarail Amusement Park train at some point in either the late 1960s when the Plarail version was current or in the early 1970s. A small set was sold as the "Trenet" with a circle of Plarail-style track, motorized train, and two cars with removable figures. A copy of this set can be seen in operation here.

Payva Tren Verbena Electrico

Payva also released, in this very oversized box, a version of what is essentially the Plarail Amusement Park No. 2 Set with train, two cars, oval of track, and two rides. This was sold as Tren Verbena Electrico or Electric Fair Train.

Funnily enough, the side of the box actually shows the original Plarail Amusement Park No. 2 Set. I really like some of the graphics around and on this box.

The train in this set is a copy of the Japanese version of the amusement park train, with a horizontal motor and gear sticking down with more complicated power switch mechanism compared to the Joy Ride train version.

The figures in this version are based on the shorter Japanese type but have different face designs.

The track in this set is a copy of the Plarail track at the time, and has all split in this example. The track stoppers actually have a slight tread pattern added to one side of the slope to help the train get up easier.

The Ferris wheel and merry-go-round are both Spanish-production by Payva and do not have the Child Guidance markings of the Amusement Park and Kiddie Land versions produced by Tomy.

Because the rails were all split, I used 1960s all-smooth Plarail curves. The carousel is fairly stiff and the train does not really have enough power to turn it - I will have to loosen it up at some point.
