Super Rail Blue Train EF-66 Set

Originally written August 20, 2025

Following the introduction of EF-66 locomotives to some Blue Train services in 1985 the very neat Super Rail EF-66 with headlights, two speeds, and horn was included in the Super Rail Blue Train EF-66 Set (ブルートレインEF-66セット).

Like other later 1980s Super Rail sets, the boxes were white with blue stripes and other details. The ST mark and N-35 mark both date this set to 1986.

The EF-66 is one of the most impressive Super Rail trains, being the first and only new two-speed locomotive since the original D-51 and ED-75s. The locomotive also has headlights - two separate bulbs! - and the only horn included in a Super Rail locomotive.

The train takes two C batteries. The power switch sticks out the side towards the back right side and a lever hanging between the front and middle bogies triggers the electronic horn.

Two nice Fuji-headmarked 24 series sleeper cars of the Ohanfu 25 type are included. They are nicely detailed and are long two-bogie cars.

All together, they make a very nice Blue Train. The Fuji was one of the services that changed to EF-66 service in 1985, so it is a nice set portraying the era even with five-plus-year-old components.

This was one of the nice large sets from the later Super Rail era, with a large loop and switches for an uncoupling siding and to reach the second station platform. Two left B switches are included as well as a return control rail and uncoupling rail.

In addition to reversing plates, there are speed-change inserts for the two-speed gearbox as well as two different lengths of horn trigger rails, one short and one long. At high speed, the short one is barely a blip, and the speed-change inserts will also trigger the horn...

Smaller accessories include two semaphore signals, four trees, two buffer stop sections, and a nice amount of single wire line poles. Its a pretty nice selection.

The nicest accessory is the very nicely detailed and stickered platform station. It is made up of many components with several stickered signs. You can even connect multiple together.

One of the grey railing ramps is also included, which is handy.

Here are the instructions for this rather nice large set. It shows how to set up the rail and explains the different types, and includes suggestions for where to use some of the control plates.

The suggested operation has the locomotive picking up the train and heading out with the ability to switch the train over to the outside platform where it will speed up and reverse out or slow down at the inside platform. Click the GIF above for the much longer video with sound including the horn.

Its a pretty cool set with different ways to act out train operations, making the locomotive go pick up its train and slow down as it approaches the station...

The platform station having tracks on both sides is very cool, and the EF-66 can couple to the train from either end... I kind of like the idea of flipping the uncoupling siding around so the passenger cars can be picked up in that siding and the train can then back into the outside station platform.
