Boss Coffee is a Japanese coffee and coffee-related beverage company that opened in 1992. From 2009 to 2012 some cans of coffee came with included Thomas the Tank Engine toys. For the first several years these trains were plastic with a coupling system and basic wheels underneath, in 2012 the toys changed to a standalone pull-back style. These were called the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends Vehicle Collection (きかんしゃトーマスとなかまたちのりものコレクション).
The first series of Boss Coffee Thomas Vehicle Collection toys were released in 2009. Ten characters were released individually with single cans and five trains with coaches were released with two-packs of coffee. The entire first wave is shown below.
Boss Coffee Thomas from the first wave. Although fairly basic and squished with just the essential details, it is a nice enough little trinket.
Annie with face sticker and side printing. Engines only have couplings on the rear, but cars have the matching clip to snap on on the front.
Clarabel, facing the other way.
The coupling system is basic and could probably be broken without too much force but it produces a solid connection.
Bertie the Bus, a little bit squished but not bad overall. Runs on single-piece wheels like the other vehicles.
Boss Coffee Harold, with spinning propeller and roller wheels. One of the blades is broken on mine... I'll glue it back in place.
Boss Coffee Percy, with slightly wonky eyes.
Toby, with molded wood slats as well as several stickers. The sticker with licensing information is located on the underside.
Duck, a nice inclusion for the initial wave of a Thomas toy range.
Donald the Scottish Twin.
And, of course, his twin Douglas.
The double pack releases from the first series include a colored passenger car.
Boss Coffee Thomas Vehicle Collection Edward with green coach.
Henry with a red coach. I think these are kind of supposed to be express coaches, but they look more like narrow-gauge style coaches.
Boss Coffee Gordon with a grey coach.
James with yellow coach.
Spencer with blue coach.
The second series of Boss Coffee Thomas Vehicle Collection toys were released in 2010 and celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Railway Series. Ten characters (Thomas, Rosie, Bill, Ben, Harold, Jeremy, Oliver, two troublesome trucks, and a 65th anniversary van) were released individually with single cans and five trains with tankers were released with two-packs of coffee.
Boss Coffee Rosie. Her rear coupler has broken off at some point.
Bill, with licensing text right on the rear sticker.
One of two troublesome trucks included in the second series.
Diesel 10 with tar tanker.
"Busy bee" James with Sodor Fuel tanker.
Stanley with grey tanker.
Emily with Milk tanker.
Hiro with tanker in the double-pack plastic topper.
The third series of the Boss Coffee Vehicle Collection Series contained only individual releases - Thomas with banners, Percy with banners, Charlie, Victor, Harold, Dash and Bash, S.C.Ruffy, Kevin, Whiff, Ferdinand, Old Slow Coach, Captain, and a Union Jack and decorated coaches were all released as part of the third and final wave of the Thomas Vehicle Collection.
In 2012 the Boss Coffee Thomas toys changed to an updated CGI style with pullback motors and no coupling abilities. This series included Thomas, Percy, James, Diesel 10, Diesel, Spencer, Hiro, Belle, and Flynn.
