Lady and Diesel 10 Chasing Set

The Plarail Lady and Plarail Diesel 10 Chasing Set (プラレールレディープラレールディーゼル10 おいかけっこセット) was released for the Thomas Plarail series on September 7, 2000. The set features both Diesel 10 and Lady powered engines as well as unpowered Splatter and Dodge and a selection of double rail track and switches to mimic the chase scene in the first Thomas the Tank Engine movie Thomas and the Magic Railroad.
All of the set components except the Splatter with front coupling (and, to be pedantic, the slight color variance of the Dodge) are fairly common. but the box has become rather hard to find. The box shown here is still sealed, but has some fading. The set as shown below was pieced together from known original and period components.

The trains in this set include all of the new characters introduced in the Thomas and the Magic Railroad movie. Diesel 10 and Lady were both released previously in standard three packs with matching troublesome trucks in July but Splatter and Dodge were first sold in this unpowered form in this set, being released in a double-powered three-pack together in 2001.
The Lady and Diesel 10 I sourced from a used copy of the set were manufactured in August 2000, just before the set came out in September. In the movie, Diesel 10 chases Lady and Thomas without Splatter and Dodge, but I think that this arrangement makes sense for a set and it makes sense to not include Thomas, who many children would already have.
The track layout in this set is made up of double rail to facilitate the chasing idea, with two loops for the trains to switch back and forth across using the double track point rail. In the middle line, an automatic turnout rail can be set to flip trains back and forth between the regular inner loop or a shortcut across the middle. Eventually, the trains will probably crash together.
There are really no accessories at all (apparently, not even the sign for the automatic rail was included) so the set looks a little bare but the focus is on the characters and rail layout, which is fun. It is nice that there are two power cars - and neither of them are Thomas!
