First written June 29, 2024

The Thomas the Tank Engine and Bertie's Competition Set (きかんしゃトーマスとバーティーのきょうそうセット) is a Thomas-series Plarail set released on July 19, 2008. The set is fairly small but includes several unique variants of common Thomas-series items.

The Thomas and Bertie in this set are slight variants - the Thomas is looking to the left and the Bertie has painted eyes looking to the right. It is neat that the two friends are looking over at one another. Like other sets, this one relates to the story of Thomas and Bertie racing together along their passenger route.

The engine and bus in my set were both produced in early 2008. Here is the face of the Thomas in this set compared with a regular 2003+ one.

The Ffarquhar Station in this set is a neat variant with white windows and doors. Out front of the station is a combined road and rail section with two trees.

Because the parallel road and rail section has two concave rail connectors, a double convex quarter straight rail and a regular quarter straight rail were included to complete the loop of track. The rest of the road in this set is lightish green Plaroad, which was reaching the end of its life in 2008.

Its obviously a basic endless loop set, and there isn't really anything that interesting other than the set-exclusive pieces. I really like the Bertie with painted eyes (it is probably the nicest-looking Motor Tomica Bertie for this reason alone) and the Ffarquhar Station also looks very nice.
