Twilight Express (1991)

First written May 1, 2025

The Twilight Express was a special sleeper express train that ran overnight between Osaka and Sapporo that began operation in 1989 and ran until spring 2015. The train starts in the southwest and crosses JR West, JR East, and JR Hokkaido territory, being pulled by special green-color EF81s as depicted in Plarail, ED79s, and DD51s at different parts of the trip. The passenger cars are modified 24 series cars.

The Plarail Twilight Express was first released in 1991 during the sixth generation and expansion of the available train in the 1990s. It was sold into the seventh generation era until the move to the new S series of trains in 2003.

The special green liveried EF81 locomotive, using the tooling of the EF-65, has the classic mix of tooled, stickered, and painted details, with the pinky Twilight Express headmark. This example was produced in October 1995, so it would have come in a seventh generation box.

The Twilight Express uses the same toolings as the new-power Blue Train, production of which had already moved to Thailand, so these Twilight Expresses were always produced in Thailand.

The coaches have stickers of the Twilight Express emblem and tail mark.

The Twilight Express was not rereleased in the 2000s S series of regular releases, but in 2010 a new Plarail Expo exclusive Twilight Express was released using the classic toolings with a more modern level of detail and grey wheels.
