The West Hikari is the name of the 0-series Shinkansen-run services on the Sanyo Shinkansen line that began in 1988 and ran regularly into 2000. On December 25th, 1998 Tomy released a Plarail version of the train as West Hikari (ウエストひかり), replacing the standard Hikari with Light that was discontinued around 1996.
Like the real train, the blue portions are a little darker than previous Plarail 0 series trains, and new details include the silver paint on the roof as well as the "more realistic" grey wheels instead of the red of previous Hikaris. The light feature is retained and identical to later Thailand-production Hikari with Light or period Doctor Yellows. I don't know exactly how many production runs of these trains they did - it doesn't seem this train was on sale for very long.
The train looks very neat and I think its a bit of a pity it doesn't seem to have been produced for very long... a similar 0-series train appears as a Hikari with Light reproduction in the Plarail 40th Anniversary Album in 1999 with yellow nose cones, red wheels, but similar updated roof paint. The chassis for the intermediate and tail cars are the same toolings used earlier in Thailand and descended from the 1980s Radio Control Hikari. Another nice Plarail 0 series...
