Yamanote Line

First written August 2024

The Yamanote Line (山手線) is a loop line in Tokyo operated by the East Japan Railway Company. The outer loop travels clockwise around the network, with the inner loop traveling counterclockwise. The section of the line that runs alongside the Yamanote Freight Line which freight trains and some other outside commuter trains like a service between Tokyo and Saitama run along.

The Yamanote Line was first built to connect the Tokaido Main Line with the Tohoku Main Line. As Tokyo grew into a major urban area, the line grew to service the city, becoming a full loop in 1925 after the Great Kanto Earthquake.

Shown here are some of the different Plarail trains I have which represent trains that have run on the Yamanote commuter line.
