Enoshima Electric Railway Sea View Travel Set (2002)

First written September 22, 2025

Released first in the relatively short-lived 2000-2002 style of boxes, the Enoshima Electric Railway Sea View Travel Set (江ノ電 海の見える旅セット) was one of the first smaller sets to heavily focus on the train and accessories included. It also appeared at the start of the PlaKids system and included two PlaKids, and it was followed up by several similar Enoshina Railway or Enoden-based sets.

The copy of the set shown here has a 2008 production date - I believe that makes it the longest-lasting set in this generation of box, and it was produced again after the 2005 Plaroad crossover Enoshima Electric Railway Train and Bus Travel Set.

The Enoshima Electric Railway old 500 Series trams were a pair of two-car sets, numbers 501 and 502, built in the later 1950s and used into the early 2000s. The 502 set is depicted in this set, and was still in operation when the set was first released - 501 was retired in January 2002 and 502 ceased commercial operations a year later. Actually, it seems both trains were being used for advertisements in their last months of operation - the 501 train was painted pink and advertised PostPet, an email client, which also had a tie-in Plarail set, and the 502 was used to advertise this Plarail set!

The rear car opens up to allow PlaKids to sit inside. Although the 300 series trams had already been reproduced as Enoden limited products a few years before, and several other classes of their trains would be commercialized in the future, I believe this (and the PostPet set) were the only times the "old" 500 series were represented in Plarail.

The tram uses the Thomas-style gearbox. I suspect they made this 2008 run of sets after the 2005 Enoden Plaroad crossover set was discontinued.

The two included PlaKids are of a windsurfer, who had curled-down hangs to hang onto the windsurfing board, and a monk. A May 2002 presale of 600 units included two more PlaKids packaged together as a bonus item, a purple monk and a different windsurfer with green and blue shirt and orange pants. Actually, the second windsurfer doesn't have the curved-down hands, instead using the inwards curved style of other figures...

This style of platform station appeared in many variations in the 2000s, replacing the old Elevated Station with a more modern design to fit the realistic style Tomy moved towards in the new millennium. The station in the set I bought has a 100th anniversary sticker on the end, which made sense in 2002, but was a few years off by 2008... Two of them were included on the sticker sheet.

There are some nice then-exclusive components too - a depiction of the Great Buddha of Kamakura and Enoshima Island with shrine, lighthouse, and docks area.

The island has slots for PlaKids to stand near the top and down by the dockside.

The track is standard for the era but the very cool Straight Rail & Road section with barriers and lampposts, representing the road that goes along the coast. There aren't any included road vehicles in this set, although the followup Enoden set from 2005 included a Plaroad bus and loop of road.

In 2010 there was another smaller set sold only at a few places related to the Enoden... it is a rather plain set, to be honest. This set with its many accessories and PlaKids train is very nice, and the Plaroad Enoden set is not bad either. Actually, I have two of a few of the accessories in this set, including the PlaKids.

It has the layout of a basic set, the simple endless loop oval, but Tomy's attention to detail and sensible selection of accessories make it a masterpiece of an oval set, it is really a self-contained diorama...
