Harvey is a steam-powered crane locomotive. Harvey was introduced in Plarail form in May 2003, not long after his first appearance in the Thomas & Friends television series.
In May 2003 Harvey was released as T-16プラレールハーヴィー T-16 Plarail Harvey in T series packaging. Harvey is an unpowered push engine with moving crane arm, with the works van behind him housing the gearbox and battery compartment. The box shown above is the original 2003 print run, as signified by the ST-3 mark on the rear.
Harvey is a maroon steam crane. The engine portion is unpowered, the first in the Thomas range, with a bulky rear coupling that connects more firmly with the thick front coupling on the works van. Harvey's crane arm swings around.
Harvey has small front wheels on metal pegs similar to Edward's front wheels, with a new style of rear wheel with molded tread to help run the maroon side rods connected to them. The works van is based on one seen in the television series (the same van was previously adapted with a hook coupling on either end for some double-train releases, but with entirely different toolings).
The flatbed shares some components with the 2001 spring-loaded flatbed but with an insert with beans and tools molded into it.
T-16 Harvey went out of production when the Thomas range was refreshed in new CGI-style boxes in 2012. Later, Harvey was rereleased with different color cars.
In 2004 Harvey began being exported to Europe in blue Thomas Motor Road & Rail packaging. A new European box style was adopted in 2005, and Harvey was also exported to the United States in Toys R Us three-pack packaging in 2005. Harvey was also included in the 2008 U.K. Tomy TrackMaster range.
In 2014 Harvey was rereleased with a new yellow works van and blue flatbed car, replacing the brief TS-14 Plarail Stanley. Harvey went back out of regular production in 2016, appearing again with the yellow van in the Thomas the Tank Engine Strongman Friends Set in 2018.
