The Lorries or Horrid Lorries were three red work trucks that antagonized some of the engines on Sodor. They first appeared in the late 1990s in the fifth season of the television show, with merchandise like the Motor Tomica version appearing soon after. Like other Plarail Thomas series road vehicles, Lorry 1 uses the same style of chassis and takes a single AAA battery for power.
Motor Tomica Lorry (ローリー) was released in Japan on March 30, 2000. Lorry 1 was the first Motor Tomica Thomas character to use the screwed type of chassis, which Bertie and Bulgy began using around 2002.
Lorry has a LOR 1 license plate, implying he is in fact Lorry 1, which the export releases confirm. Lorry 1 has a soft-sided-style truck canopy that leaves his body shell fairly spacious.
Late in the era of Tomica World not long before it was renamed Thomas Motor Road & Rail, Lorry 1 was released individually in Europe. Lorry 1 also appeared in the export Day Out with James set in 2002, which was a regular release in Europe and a mail-order exclusive in the United States the only time Lorry 1 was released in America.
In 2003 the individual European release Lorry 1 was rereleased in blue Motor Road & Rail packaging. Around 2005 an updated box showing Green Bulgy as being available was released. In 2007 the Australian Mega Set also included Lorry 1.
In 2004 Motor Tomica was relaunched as Plaroad and several Thomas characters were released in Plaroad packaging including Lorry.
