Tomy Preschool Train Set (2000)

In 2000 the Preschool Train Set was released in North America as part of the Preschool Tomy range, with the packaging using the light blue and white cloud motif of other products in the range. This release overlaps with the period of the Tomica World series of Plarail exports and uses some Tomica World components. The 7419 catalogue number also fits into Tomica World, and the box mentions their compatibility.

This set is somewhat obscure, and it was not widely known where the included train came from, or that it even existed, at one time. As you can see, this particular unused example ended up on clearance for rather cheap.

The train in this set is a red steam locomotive based on the reissued Plarail Benkei. Although the box refers to the train having two carriages, the tender acts as the battery compartment and is attached to the locomotive.

I love that the train is apparently in service on the "Good Western" railway - its not great, but its good enough I guess. The train has black couplings like the Benkei.

The tender has a friction-fit battery cover and the warning sticker about hair entanglement inside. The production sticker on mine dates to August 2000 but it is actually over a larger sticker that seems to date to June 2000 instead.

The brakevan in the set is also unique, an inversion of the old Japanese-market brakevan. Like the engine it has black couplings and is of the later type with axle boxes.

Because the set I bought was entirely unused, the original cardboard packaging for the train was included, something not often retained in used sets.

The main accessories in the set are the export Country Station complete with the Tomica World sticker and a Rail Drawbridge which lowers as the train travels over it.

A tree and signal are also included with the wider rim base used in export sets.

The track is the larger Basic Set No. 2-style passing loop layout like the Thomas the Tank Engine Basic Set, with a pair of switches, a stop rail, and a few half straight rails that can be used in different ways.

Here are the instructions for the set. There seems to have been some confusion as to the names of the turnout and stop rails on the instructions and the box... The instructions also specifically say the Tomica World fun continues with this set.

I love the Good Western train in this set and the track layout is the nice slightly-expanded passing loop layout, which offers a lot more fun than a basic oval set. The accessories are also suitable for a basic set like this.
