Plarail L Limited Express Set (1977)

The L Limited Express Set (Lとっきゅうセット) was a small basic set released in 1977 with the L Limited Express train.

 

My box is rather tattered... the age mark put on boxes was changed from 2 to 8 to 2 to 6 in 1975, but this box is marked with the old 2 to 8 range.

The L Limited Express train was introduced in 1976 and previously appeared in a set with a small electric railroad crossing as a two-car train, but this set follows the 1970s convention of small oval sets with limited basic accessories and three-car trains. Later in 1977 the train appeared in the larger Basic No.3 Set. The train in this set is an early metal gearbox type.

The rail in my copy of this set was a mix of older types - some of the curves were of the time, as pictured, while others predated the introduction of the roughtop rail surface in 1974. Neither original straight rail was included.

 

 

If you bring all the accessories together, you can just about make a nice looking scene...

Honestly, there are a lot of these fairly simple basic sets from the 1970s with no real standout accessories, so the train usually carried them. I like the L Limited trains, but they are pretty common as far as old power trains go, so this set is nothing special compared to other 70s oval sets with more unique trains like the Sleeper Express Highland Station Set.
