Plarail Basic Sets and Set Types

Plarail has seen many long-standing layouts as well as briefly-produced set-exclusive items - shown on this page are many of the "basic" sets I own which have small layouts and common accessories, as well as other long-standing layouts like the Overpass set.

Plarail Basic Sets

Since the early days of Plarail in the 1960s, numbered sets have given a simple indication of the size of the set contained. In the 1970s many trains were released in oval sets and in later 1970s these basic layouts evolved into the numbered Basic sets. The No. 1 set is a basic oval, and the No. 2 set is a passing loop, with the lesser-seen No. 3 set incorporating a passing siding. Although these sets do often include accessories, they were typically off-the-shelf types as opposed to set variants. Collected here are the "Basic No." and similar type sets in my collection.

Overpass Set

Another common and long-lasting layout is the "Overpass" and its variations, with a lower loop that branches off and up to an elevated section that crosses over the lower track. It first appeared in 1974 and has also been used in export sets. Modified versions continue to appear as the recent "Best Selection" sets and remote control sets.

First, Beginner and Starter Sets

Tomy has also released a variety of Beginner and First sets, quite often also with small layouts, positioned as starter sets for the series. Two circle sets appeared in the mid 1970s, with the complexity of layouts varying over time. In the later 1990s with the shift to focus on trains and accessories the First Try and My Town Train series were released with small layouts and detailed trains. Several "First" Thomas-series sets have also been released
