Plarail 583 Series Sleeper Express

The 581/583 series of sleeper trains were designed to be converted between daytime seating and overnight sleeping bunks to continue operating all day. They entered use in the late 1960s and reached speeds of 120km/h, making them the fastest sleeper train in Japan at the time. The trains operated several routes including the daytime Tsubame or Swallow and Hato services and sleeper trains like the Gekko and Naha. The Plarail 583-series trains were introduced in 1975 during the third and final era of lift-off top boxes.

Sleeper Express (1975)

The Sleeper Express was first released in 1975 with a metal old-power gearbox and the older mid 1970s "chunky" couplings and thinner rear drive wheels on the power car.

Like other trains of the era it combines well-thought-out tooled details with simple paint application and a few stickers. The blue sticker covering the bonnet in front of the cab windows is a very nice touch.

I have also come across a separate and rather beat-up intermediate car with later couplings, so I can make a four-car train.

The axle-holding clips on the bottom of the car have also been reinforced. Actually, somewhere I have an even poorer condition intermediate car somewhere that has cracked hooks on one of the axle holders and is thus missing a wheelset... perhaps I will try making a five-car train some time.

The old-power metal gearbox chassis was also used for the L Limited Express with a different body shell, which went on to represent several different liveries and services. Like the L Limited, I suspect by the early 1980s the trains had more robust axle holders and the "insert"-type intermediate and tail car chassis, but the Sleeper Express desappeared from production around 1982, with the L Limited later converted to use the plastic old-power gearbox.

With the wave of increased adult interest in Plarail in the early 2000s, 583-series Sleeper Express trains were represented again in new power as special releases like the criticized 2001 Plarail Day Sleeper Express reissue and the odd but well-liked export "USA" Sleeper Express trains. The latest Plarail Sleeper Express came in a 2006 three-pack of trains that had all hauled the Tsubame service at different times.
